Mycology

The Mycology service uses a combination of standard and advanced tests to provide a comprehensive diagnostic service of fungal infections. This includes identification of fungal organisms causing superficial and invasive infections and susceptibility testing of yeasts to a range of antifungal agents. Mycology services are located at QEII Medical Centre and Fiona Stanley Hospital.

FSH is providing reference level diagnostics in systemic mycosis and fungal susceptibility especially in transplant patents.

Samples from skin, hair, nails and a wide range of systemic sites are examined microscopically using fluorescent or traditional staining techniques. A range of phenotypic and genotypic testing may be performed on isolates to identify clinically relevant fungi. We aim to provide a microscopy report within two working days and culture reports in 2 – 4 weeks depending on the type of specimen. Testing for cryptococcal antigen in serum and cerebrospinal fluid is also available.
