Hospital Inpatients

Paying for pathology services as a hospital patient

Patients with private health insurance (including Pension and Health Care Card holders)

If you’re insured with a private health fund, you’ll be charged at a no-gap level. This means you won’t be charged any out-of-pocket expenses relating to your PathWest pathology during your public or private hospital stay.

Patients without private health insurance (including Pension and Health Care Card holders)

If you don’t have a private health fund, and you choose to admit as a private inpatient, you’ll receive an account for your pathology tests. You’ll be able to claim 75% of the scheduled fee from Medicare and you’ll be required to pay the balance.

Private health insurance members

We’ll send your account directly to your health fund. If there’s been an oversight and you do receive an invoice from us, email our accounts receivable team or phone (08) 6457 1200 and quote your Medicare number and heath fund member number so we can redirect your account to your health fund.

We can only process your claim if the details we received match with those of your Medicare and health fund. If we are unable to validate your details, we will send invoices for you to claim directly from Medicare and your health fund.
