10/07/2026
The PathWest Haematology Cytogenetics Laboratory at Fiona Stanley Hospital has ranked seventh worldwide among 105 participating laboratories in the international APEC14B1 paediatric cancer study.
As an accredited Children's Oncology Group (COG) laboratory, PathWest is required to maintain an abnormality detection rate (ADR) above 55 per cent for childhood and adolescent leukaemia and lymphoma cases enrolled in the study.
In 2025, the laboratory achieved an outstanding ADR of 94.1 per cent, improving on its already impressive result of 92.9 per cent in 2024. The result is significantly higher than the global average of 74.5 per cent across participating laboratories.
Detecting the subtle chromosomal abnormalities associated with childhood cancers is highly specialised and technically challenging. Achieving such a high detection rate demonstrates the expertise, dedication and precision of the laboratory team.
This exceptional performance highlights PathWest's contribution to high-quality patient care, world-class diagnostic services and international research aimed at improving outcomes for children and young people with cancer.
Congratulations to the PathWest Haematology Cytogenetics Laboratory team on this outstanding achievement.
